Manchester Star Ale - J.W. Lees Brewery - Middleton Junction, Manchester, England

7.3% abv. Given to me by my brother-in-law on my first Father's Day...thanks Chooch! Beer revived after 120 years of exstinction. Pours dark brown with an inch thick tan head. Caramel, toffee, bittersweet chocolate, dark fruit, molasses, and just a touch of hops on the nose. First sip is excellent. Roasted flavors burst all over the mouth, but the sweetness is balanced by a light floral hop note. There is some mild alcohol burn with the first sip, but it is soothing rather than harsh or astringent. Sheens of thick lace cling to the sides of the glass. This beer gets better with each sip. Notes of anise and perhaps even a smokey flavor like a mild cigar tobacco. This would pair amazingly well with a steak on the grill and a loaded baked potato. I really like this beer. Happy Father's Day to me!
